Dr. Jonathan Shay

Dr. Shay is the founder of the term moral injury, at least as applied to veterans. This video is the first interview I have seen of him. It is worth watching the whole, two part series. They are relatively short, but pack a lot into them. Some highlights:

I really don’t like the term PTSD (he explains why).

The only recovery from moral injury is peer relationships.

Psychiatrists/psychologists are merely stage hands.

Though those who have never been to war can empathize, but they can never really understand.

Some minor nitpicks…

  • He never addresses the morality of war, period.
  • His definition is unnecessarily narrow, confined as it is to the veteran community.

If you’ve never read his books, you should.
