Dirty Laundry

This book review of Dirty Jobs touches on a salient point. Namely the tendency of the public shunting all acknowledgement of what war really means. This morning the Washington Post ran an article on the real state of morale on the Ukrainian side. It’s not a pretty picture. It’s the dirty reality of a hopelessly outmatched force being ground down by medieval style siege tactics.

Sweeping reality under the rug is ongoing. I’m reminded of an essay I wrote about folks thanking me for my service. In it I pointed out that what they were really thanking me for was killing and destroying another country on their behalf without them having to think about it. It’s something to think about before reflexively thanking someone for their service, especially if you are not also a veteran.
